Building a deck is a great way to increase your outdoor living space, and it’s never been easier, of course there’s also never been so many options. Deciding on the deck materials will be your first challenge.
Two of the most common types of materials used are pressure-treated wood and composite. A pressure-treated deck has a naturally attractive appearance, but can be considerably more maintenance than composite decking.
To retain it’s naturally appealing look, pressure-treated decking typically involves power washing, resealing, or staining every three years. Without the proper care and attention to detail, a pressure-treated deck may dry out, crack, and generally not provide the longevity you would’ve hoped for. On the plus side pressure-treated wood can be sanded and sealed numerous times throughout the life of the deck with an occasional board needing to be replaced.
Warranties for pressure treated wood decking tend to be up to 10 years less than those offered for composite decking. Composite decking, on the other hand is a low maintenance solution that has a distinct look and feel, though the initial cost can be almost twice as much as pressure-treated. This cost may be spread over a longer period of time, as composite decking materials usually come with a 25 year warranty. It’s composite material is resistant to rotting and doesn’t require painting, sustaining or sealing. Once installed, it essentially takes care of itself. This will appeal to homeowners who want to spend more time entertaining versus maintaining their deck. But keep in mind composite decks are not immune to wear and tear, and the materials are not scratch proof, and can also fade over time. So, how can you make the best choice of material?
